The Whalley Range Community First Fund

 The final round of Whalley Range Community First Funding is now open for applications of between £250-£1000

 

all applications must be submitted by September 26th

(Please be aware all funding needs to be spent in full by February 2015)

Groups/individuals who operate or live in Whalley Range and whose proposals would benefit residents and be deliverable in Whalley Range will be considered.

Projects need to demonstrate matched funding which means that every £1 provided in funding must be matched by a similar amount of in-kind donations – this means donations of cash, services, free products or volunteer time (calculated at £11.09 per hour)

Applicants can apply for between £250-£1000 for their project (more details can be found on the website)

Priorities identified by Whalley Range residents were approved by the Community Development Foundation and applications must demonstrate the following:

1. How the project fits with the criteria:

 Promote local & green employability

 • Promote local health & wellbeing

 • Promote local community cohesion &involvement

 • Champion local environment awareness & community engagement

 • Promote local capacity building.

2. Demonstrate how project fits and will meet the needs of the community.

3. That at least one of the project funding holders live in ‘the area of Whalley Range’.

4. That the project will benefit ‘the area of Whalley Range’.

Welcome

Community First is an £80m government-funded initiative, managed by the Community Development Foundation, that will run for four years, until March 2015.

The programme will help communities come together to identify their strengths and local priorities in order to plan for their future and become more resilient.

It will fund both new and existing community groups.

Funding Available to Improve Conditions for Residents!

Whalley Range has received some Government money to invest in the area.

Do you need funding for your group?

You can apply to the new Whalley Range Community First Panel for a small grant to improve your neighbourhood.

New and existing community groups who live in Whalley Range can apply for funding for projects that will benefit the area.

In line with the criteria set by the Community Development Foundation, the Panel used feedback from Residents to identify 5 priorities for Whalley Range as:

Promoting Employability

Health & Wellbeing

Promoting Community Cohesion

Capacity Building in 3rd Sector Organisations

Promoting Community Involvement.

Whalley Range Community First funding

Whalley Range ABC @ Tangmere: Access to Basic Computing for older residents at Tangmere Court

Regular drop in sessions available to older people in the Whalley Range community providing them with the opportunity to become familiar with computers

Seated Zumba classes for residents with reduced mobility at Trafalgar Court

The classes aim to improve the variety of available exercise in the area, bring like-minded people together to meet and socialise and to improve the participant’s health and well-being.

ESOL classes for Women at the JNR8 Youth & Community Centre

The weekly ESOL classes are to encourage women to learn basic English in a supported setting.

Many women are unable to attend mixed classes for cultural reasons; the classes will help to reduce isolation, encourage participation and improve confidence and self esteem by enabling women who live locally to learn basic English.

Whalley Range Health & Multi Sports Programme

Community on Solid Ground will deliver multi sports sessions delivered by qualified coaches

to children aged between 6-16.

The project will run once a week for 48 weeks and will continue throughout the school holidays.

Movers & Shakers Women’s Keep Fit at the JNR8 Youth & Community Centre

The Keep Fit sessions will encourage local women to improve their health, fitness, confidence and self esteem, reduce isolation – and encourage participation in a safe accessible environment.

Whalley Range Work Club

WRYOA will provide access to group workshops and one-to-one sessions, predominately supporting younger jobseekers, including school leavers and those starting out.

Support and guidance on employment issues, including writing CV’s, job applications, and interview preparation: the work club will be used as a consultation exercise to identify training needs of all participants

(the project will also include internet job/training access for older residents by arrangement)

The successful projects for 2011/2 are listed below in no particular order:

Community on Solid Ground – ‘Inspiring Change’, plans to mentor young people to achieve their full potential.  Contact 0161 862 0955

JNR8 ‘Positivity’ – plans to develop the confidence and skills of isolated and workless women. Contact 0161 881 3744.

Whalley Range Youth Opportunities Association – ‘Thai Boxing at Whiz’, plans sessions for people in the 11-25 age group.   Contact 0161 881 3744.

It’s a great pity that only £5930 was available in that round of funding – because we were very impressed with all the applications & would have loved to fund them all.

Applying for Funding

The following general rules were agreed by the Panel on 29th March 2012:

1 Groups/individuals who operate or live in Whalley Range and whose proposals would benefit residents and deliverable in Whalley Range will be considered.

2 Panel members must declare their interest if they are involved in any project to be considered.

3 Such members will not be involved in the relevant discussions.

4 Groups/individuals can not re-apply for similar project.

5 All applications forwarded to members must be treated as confidential documents.

Whalley Range Priorities

Our Priorities were identified through consultations with residents and approved by the Community Development Foundation. Image

Priority No. 1: PROMOTING EMPLOYABILITY

Work with partners to support employment events and capacity building of unemployed residents 

Priority No.2: HEALTH & WELLBEING 

Work with partner agencies and local groups / residents to promote well-being and healthier practices

Priority No. 3: PROMOTING COMMUNITY COHESION

Support local groups and events to promote understanding and cohesion amongst diverse local communities 

Priority No. 4: PROMOTING CAPACITY BUILDING IN 3RD SECTOR ORGANISATIONS

Including exploring new avenues for funding and partnership working 

 Priority No. 5: PROMOTING COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT 

Support local events / activities to promote community involvement (all age groups)

 
We can now start to consider projects which conform to these priorities.
